Deguchi, Onisaburo
The Five Activities of the Mind According to Onisaburo's teaching, we humans have a spirit of God. We all come from God, so there is no wonder we inherit a spirit of God. This spirit is called "直霊" ("Naohi": also called "chokurei"). This is also your real soul and your true self. When Naohi is working right, there are five works of the mind. These five activities or works of your mind are called "省", "恥", "悔", "畏", "覚". Without these mental activities, your mental state falls to an animal level. On the other hand, if you cultivate your mind with these five activities, you will harvest fruit called enlightenment. 省(Reflection):To reflect on your conducts in your daily life. This is the first step to know yourself. 恥(Shame): If you find you have done something wrong through the reflection, you will be ashamed. 悔(Remorse):If you are ashamed of your misconducts, you feel remorse, and try not to make the same mistake again. 畏(Awe):Through the process of reflection, shame, and remorse, you will recognize God who is the creator and the organizer of the universe, and you feel awe and pay respect to God. 覚(Enlightenment): If you know God's existence, you will listen to your Naohi (your true soul) more than ever, and eventually, you will achieve enlightenment.
